Ashram History

From the year 1956

Srimat Swami Rakanandaji Maharaj of Ramakrishna Math Nagpur started visiting Yavatmal for Jivan Vikas Magazine Subscribers. He used to go door to door for making Subscribers on cycle. Then MP Sri Janraoji Jawade, Sri Ramesh Sule of Indian Post, District Librarian Sri Kakasaheb Deshpande, Sri Nathalal Chandarana of Pandharkawada Village, Lawyer Sri Barve, Sri Tukaramji Wankhede, Sri Jainarayanji Ahir, a teacher from Wani Sri Gundawar and many others came in contact with Swami Rakananda. In this way these people started visiting Ramakrishna Math Nagpur. Srimat Swami Bhaskareshwaranandaji Maharaj, then Adhyaksha of Ramakrishna Math Nagpur inspired these people and they became the devotee of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. During the period 1958 to 1960 all these people received an initiation.

Sri Jainarayanji Ahir brought the cassette of Ramakrishna Aaratrikam and started playing in the evening since 1958. Daily 8-9 people used to gather for Evening Aarti at the house Sri Pimpalkar near the Church. Swamis Bhaskareshwaranandaji, Rakanandaji Maharaj inspired these devotees of Yavatmal to acquire the land to start an Ashram.
Devotees formed the Charitable Trust named “Sri Ramakrishna Ashram Yavatmal” in 1959 and registered it. MP Sri Janraoji Jawade became the first president of Sri Ramakrishna Ashram Yavatmal. Sri Vasantraoji Naik was Revenue Minister in Maharashtra and he belonged to Yavatmal area. He knew about Ramakrishna Math when he was student studying at Nagpur. Ashram applied for the government land and Sri Naik granted more than 17 acre land to the Ashram in Umarsara village now a part of Yavatmal City. It was much more than expectations. It was on 99 years lease on Rs.1 per year.

In 1960

one room was constructed on the new land. In 1962 on the auspicious day of Ramnavami (13th April 1962, Friday), Swami Rakanandaji installed the images of Holy Trio there with elaborate Puja and Ceremony. In this way Sri Ramakrishna Ashram of Yavatmal was established on own land. Though it was 3km from city, the devotees like Sri Madhukarraoji Gatlewar and Sri Manoharrao Naigaonkar took responsibility of Morning Prayer and evening Aarti without the break.
Today Ashram land is very precious land and very near to important places like Oxygen Park, Water filtration plant and Prayas Van. Nagpur-Kolhapur ring road is 3km from Ashram and Yavatmal Railway station on Wardha-Nanded rail line is 5km from Ashram.
The idea of someone staying in the Ashram took shape in the form of boys hostel. So four rooms were constructed for this purpose and hostel was started in 1975. Sri Dinkar Wankhede and Sri Ramakant Kolte, both then Professor of Amolakchand College looked after the hostel. Due to their care, the hostel is still there.

In 1968

By the efforts of Kakasaheb Deshpande and Sri Arun Sarmokadam, Sri Ramakrishna Library was started and there after this library received the Government Grant. For the library one building was constructed and it was inaugurated by Srimat Swami Vyomrupanandaji Maharaj of Nagpur. In 2020 Ashram took decision to stop receiving the grant. Now it is private library.
Slowly and steadily Ashram was on progress and one by one project was taken up. For the monks visiting Yavatmal Ashram, Monk Quarter was constructed. After passing away of founder members, the young generation like Sri Madhukarraoji Gatlewar, Sri Dinkar Wankhede, Sri Manoharrao Naigaonkar and Sri Bhau Deshpande took charge of the Ashram under the leadership of Sri Kakasaheb Deshpande.
Srimat Swami Vagishwaranandaji Maharaj and Srimat Swami Yogatmanandaji Maharaj of Nagpur Math used to visit Yavatmal and lecture in the Ashram. Ashram started celebrating Birthdays of Holy Trio, Ramnam on every Ekadashi, 3 days Lecture Series in Library and other festival as per Nagpur Math. Swami Brahmasthanandaji Maharaj, the Adhyaksha of Nagpur Math started visiting the Ashram and guided the devotees for better progress of the Ashram.
Srimat Swami Nikhilatmanandaji Maharaj of Allahabad, Srimat Swami Bhaumanandaji Maharaj of Pune used to come to Yavatmal and guide the devotees.

On 6th and 7th July 2002

the meeting of Maharashtra Bhavdhara Parishad was held at Yavatmal first time and the monks like Srimat Swami Vagishanandaji Maharaj of Mumbai, Swami Bhaumanandaji Maharaj of Pune, Swami Vishnupadanandaji Maharaj of Aurangabad, and Swami Brahmasthanandaji Maharaj of Nagpur came to Yavatmal and guided the devotees.
The second meeting was held at Yavatmal on 5th and 6th July 2013 and Swamis Brahmasthanandaji Maharaj, Srikantanandaji Maharaj of Pune, Brahmeshanandaji Maharaj of Varanasi, Vishnupadanandaji Maharaj and Sarvalokanandaji Maharaj of Mumbai came to Yavatmal Ashram and guided the devotees.

In 2010

A Kinder Garden School was started for the kids of local area.

In the year 2013-2014

The 150th Birthday of Swami Vivekananda was celebrated all over the world on large scale. On this occasion, Ramakrishna Math Nagpur arranged the Ratha Yatra in Viderbha and Khandesh. Yavatmal Ashram arranged different programmes to welcome Ratha Yatra at different places in and around Yavatmal.
Recently, the facility of study room is opened for the student appearing for competitive exams.
